A player will find themselves in one of two situations when their NHL contract expires, either an unrestricted free agent (UFA) or restricted free agent (RFA). UFAs have the ability of select from among the teams who have offered a new contract. However, this luxury is only tendered to players who meet the minimum age and/or service requirements.
